Dear Wilfrid Laurier University Community,

We are Wilfrid Laurier University faculty members who are troubled by the events that have recently taken place on our campus and the impacts on trans, non-binary, and gender diverse students and faculty.

Wilfrid Laurier University students and faculty are now being subjected to threats of violence, harassment, intimidation, and our campuses have become unsafe.

We are concerned that little has been done to ensure that members of our community are being protected. If we cannot dedicate more resources, provide a more comprehensive response, and speak against these acts in clear and unequivocal terms, we will be perceived as tolerating these acts. Our university has a duty to uphold the principles of diversity and equity, to foster a culture of inclusion, and to provide institutional support. 

We call on the administration to immediately:

1.    Issue a statement that these actions will not be tolerated on our campus. That transphobia and all other forms of hate targeting persons on the basis of gender identity and expression are being carefully monitored and actions of harassment are reported to the relevant authorities.

2.    Establish measures to ensure the safety and protection of students and faculty who are being subjected to discrimination, harassment, and threats on their lives.
