Remove Confederate Plaque from Texas Capitol Building

Remove Confederate Plaque from Texas Capitol Building
The Issue
The time has come for the "Children of the Confederacy" plaque in the capitol building to come down. The plaque was dedicated in 1959 and states that members of the organization, "pledge ourselves to preserve pure ideals: To honor our veterans, to study and teach the truths of history (one of the most important of which is, that the war between the states was not a rebellion nor was its underlying cause to sustain slavery) and to always act in a manner that will reflect honor upon our noble and patriotic ancestors." The “Children of the Confederacy” have even repudiated this statement by removing it from their creed.
The Vice-Chairman of the State Preservation Board and Speaker of the Texas House, Joe Straus called for the removal of the plaque last year, and with the 1st anniversary of the Charlottesville tragedy, he has renewed that call in a thoughtful op-ed: https://www.star-telegram.com/opinion/opn-columns-blogs/other-voices/article216657845.html The Chair of the SPB Governor Greg Abbott has the authority to remove this plaque; however, he refuses to take the necessary steps to not only remove this demonstrably false monument, but more importantly he is failing to provide moral leadership at a critical moment for our state and nation.
Removal of this plaque is merely the first and long overdue step in coming to terms with the past. We encourage Gov. Abbott to consult with the historical community to understand how other nations have sought meaningful reconciliation, understanding, and healing for their peoples.
We also encourage every Texan to read the Declaration of Causes for Secession in its entirety: https://www.tsl.texas.gov/ref/abouttx/secession/2feb1861.html
