Pay teachers properly - they deserve better

Dear Justine Greening and Theresa May,
We are deeply concerned at the announcement by the government of a proposed pay award of 2% for main scale teachers and 1% for those on the Upper Pay Spine. This is not a pay increase; it is the continuation of 16% real-term pay cut.
This announcement runs counter to the view of the STRB report of 2016 which noted that “on our assessment of recruitment and retention alone, there was a case for a higher than 1% uplift to the national pay framework”.
We agree with the STRB that:
“Teacher retention rates continue to fall, particularly for those in the early stages of their career, and targets for ITT recruitment continue to be missed. We are deeply concerned about the cumulative effect of these trends on teacher supply. We consider this presents a substantial risk to the functioning of an effective education system”.
We are particularly concerned that the government has made it clear that these awards will not be fully funded by the government and that schools will be expected to make ‘difficult decisions'. In the light of the huge funding cuts and the recruitment and retention crisis faced by schools across the UK, this is a short-sighted and negligent decision which must be overturned.
We therefore call on the government to rescind its decision and make a revised pay offer that is fully funded from central government.
Teachers like other public sector workers, including school support staff, deserve better than this.
