To,

The Greater Chennai Corporation.

Subject: Renaming an arterial road in Chennai as “MAJOR MUKUND VARADARAJAN SALAI”

Service Before Self has been the motto of our soldiers who have spent many sleepless nights manning our borders to protect 1.2 billion fellow Indians.

Amongst the martyrs who have laid their lives is a Chennaite, Major Mukund Varadarajan. He sacrificed his life during an encounter with terrorists in Shopian district in Jammu & Kashmir on April 25th 2014. The Government of India conferred him with the Ashok Chakra, India's highest award for courage in peacetime, posthumously for his supreme sacrifice in the service of our nation.

He was also a man with a family. To quote his parent, “Whenever he spoke about missing his family, I would immediately tell him that this was why I didn't want him to go out there. But he never liked me saying that. The army was his life."

Major Mukund Varadarajan, is a shining example of what every Chennaite and every Indian should aspire to be – an embodiment of valour, respect, culture, strong will, confidence, open-mindedness, bravery and patriotism.

We, the people of Chennai, request the Greater Chennai Corporation to remember this fearless son of this soil by renaming an arterial road in the city after him as “MAJOR MUKUND VARADARAJAN SALAI”.

Please find attached with this letter the signatures to support the same. (The Late Major's father signed a hard copy of this petition to mark a beginning of this initiative.)

Yours sincerely,

K Abdul Ghani (Green Man of India) &

RJ Sano (on behalf of People of Chennai)

Please Note: There have been a few attempts towards the same objective in the past that unfortunately have not been successful. We hope that all of us can make this citizen-driven initiative a success!
