Shortly after Nash was listed for heart transplant, he deteriorated and needed mechanical support for his heart. He was placed on an LVAD, which is a pump for the left side of the heart.
The LVAD was great in the fact that Nash could gain some weight and had energy to play, but it came with many complications. The medical team constantly had to cut out clots from the LVAD that could have travelled to his brain, and he had 2 stomach bleeds, 1 that was very serious.
After almost 3 months of being on the transplant list (listed as National priority, which means any hearts that were Nash’s size were offered to Nash first), we finally got the call one morning! It was a bittersweet moment, Nash would be getting a new life, but it meant that a child had passed away. We couldn't believe the selflessness that the donor family had!
Nash’s new heart was a perfect match and fit into his little chest beautifully.
Nash still has a long road before going home, but it is a road to recovery and a road to home.
