Child Pornography is Child Abuse. Change the law.

Child Pornography is Child Abuse. Change the law.
The Issue
There are over 45 million images and videos of children being sexually abused on the internet right now. These are real life crime scene photos of the very worst event(s) in these children's lives. The children being abused in the images and videos are as young as newborns. It is becoming increasingly common for the content to include babies and toddlers.
New data is showing that the people who take pleasure from watching rape and sexual assault videos of children are in fact raping and assaulting children in real life. One study showed that child predators can have as many as 8-20 real life victims. However, they are often hard to find.
These predators are also driving up the demand for more children to be abused. As these people view increasingly graphic content, their desire for younger victims engaged in increasingly violent and deviant acts is increasing.
Why then, is the state of Virginia allowing these people to only serve a median sentence of 15.5 months in jail? Why are so many of these people serving NO jail time AT ALL for their offenses?
The state of Virginia needs legislative reform.
That is why we are asking for:
- Increased sentencing guidelines around the possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material
- No suspended sentences or work release for people violating this law.
- Change the use of the term child pornography to child sexual abuse material (CSAM) in VA state legislation to better reflect the seriousness of this crime and the damage it causes to its victims.
