Recess legislation passed the General Assembly on the last day of session. Make no mistake: this only happened because you wrote and called and spoke up. Provided the Governor does not veto the bill, all elementary kids in RI will now have at least 20 minutes of free play recess everyday.
This happened because parents' voices are strong. This happened because parents insisted it must.
You can read the recess legislation here: http://webserver.rilin.state.ri.us/BillText/BillText16/HouseText16/H7644Aaa.pdf.
While the language is not 100% what we wanted, this bill:
- Recognizes recess as a right.
- Requires 20 consecutive minutes of free play for all elementary school students each day (including those that go up to grade 6).
- Requires teachers make a good faith effort to not withhold recess for punitive reasons.
This is a good step in the right direction. Please send an email and call Governor Raimondo and ask her to support this common sense, bare minimum standard for free play for children. You can reach her at (401) 349-1318 or (401) 222-2080. You can also reach the governor by visiting: http://www.governor.ri.gov/contact/
Continue to share and ask others to sign this petition until this law is signed by the Governor. Thank you for speaking up and being willing to go to bat for free play for school children.
