Dear community in support of Playuela in Aguadilla PR, Last month was full of difficult moments but our commitment and inspiration have prevailed. More than 20 people where arrested during public manifestations, highlighting the level of social participation to sustain Puerto Rico natural assets. Among the tears, long nights, and restless workdays, positivism is fueling our productiveness. Urbanization operation stopped after intense media coverage and analysis (Local TV News and Web Journals, National Geographic, Washington Post, etc). We are now prepared for another court session this Friday, March 17th, 2017 where several irregularities of the permit issuing process will be presented to a judge. We know you care so we would like to share some recent achievements and coordination improvements: A) A steering committee has been established to develop and submit several funding applications in the upcoming months/years B) The World Surfing Reserves Proposal working group is developing content for submitting a letter of intent to designate the 1st Surfing Reserve of the Caribbean! C) Many community based outreach activities have been performed with healthy public participation, including public figures, athletes, and local community members. D) The species inventory required to classify habitats and submit conservation designations have been significantly expanded, including more than 25 new species of birds not documented before in the area. E) Last but not least, a website has been released to act as a center of information and support for the protection and sustainable development of northwest Puerto Rico. Several volunteer-based Non-profit organizations are coming together to coordinate present and future efforts.
