December 2017 will make it a year the city of Port Harcourt in Rivers state has been under the rain of carbon or soot as from an engine combustion.
There was a time in 2016 when there was protest and people went to the government house on Mosco Road in Port Harcourt. After that exercise, things seem to return back to normal. What we didn't know was that the rainy season helped to reduce the visibility of the carbon and nothing was done by the Rivers state government to curb this menace.
A year down the road, residents of Port Harcourt city in Nigeria still have these soot or carbon settling in our homes, on the floor, on our cooking utensils in the kitchen, on clothes left in the open to sun dry it even on open water surfaces. The Port Harcourt leisure park by Air Force Base is a typical example of the impact of this carbon in the atmosphere.
Thinking about the health implication of inhaling carbon is another concern. Some families have little children who crawl on the floor that is ridden with deposits of carbon thereby forcing parents to keep mopping the floor as many times as possible daily. One can imagine the health risk to little children and the extra expenses parents will have to incur taking care of the kids when they fall sick as a result of this. Not every home can afford the luxury of having an air conditioner on while shutting the windows and even if that was possible, there's is no stable supply of electricity. This imploes that windows will be opened at one time or the other.
This inhalation poses grave danger to the health of residents both young or old.
Please sign this petition to help get the intervention of the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Governor of Rivers State, the Federal Minister of Health and his Ministry and every other person to put an end to this so residents can have good air to breathe in.
