Julie L. Loveland started this petition to Governor Gregg Abbott

I live in San Antonio where the use of fireworks are illegal, yet in the county that San Antonio is a city of, it is lawful to sell fireworks. Now then no reasonably intelligent human being could believe that people would buy fireworks in the county and not use them in the city. These are not firecrackers. These are explosives in the hands of often intoxicated people who are not celebrating a holiday, but rather causing other citizens distress and costing taxpayers money.

It makes no sense to stretch law enforcement to further limits by allowing the sale of fireworks in the state. If they answer a disturbance call there’s nothing they can do. They have to man phone lines for the surge of calls, thousands of calls, from citizens who are at their wits end. Then there is animal care services who have to pick up dogs that have escaped from houses and yards in an effort to get away from the terror. Or solid waste who must scrape them off the roadways after running into traffic, panicked and getting hit. Hospitals have to treat injuries and someone has to clean up the litter and debris left behind.

Then there are those who suffer from PTSD. San Antonio is “military city” and a large number of the community are affected.

I don’t feel as a taxpayer or as a community member that I should have to endure this mayhem every holiday. The noise is so loud and resonating that it feels like being in the middle of a combat zone. It is a terrible feeling to be a hostage in your own home and there is nothing you can do to remedy your situation.

For these reasons I am asking that those who are having the same issue join me in pleading with the state of Texas to legislate law to ban the sale and use of fireworks to non professionals in our great state. We cannot pass laws that make our neighbors be thoughtful of one another, but we can stop supplying the tools that aid them in carrying out their disregarding behavior.
