Red for Ed California started this petition to Governor and

Despite the fact that California is the 5th largest economy in the world, we have some of the largest class sizes and lowest funded public schools in the nation. Many children must share desks or even sit on the floor during class.  Elementary school children have 35 or more children in a classroom with just one teacher and no aide.  The class sizes for middle school and high school are staggering.  There is a severe shortage of school nurses and counselors to keep kids safe, and our staff to student ratio is the lowest in the nation.  Schools can't afford text books and materials or the upkeep to our aging campuses. K-12 public education in California has been severely under funded for decades and it needs to be fixed now!

Here are just a few actions we're asking California lawmakers to take action on:

1. Stop cheating out kids by taking funds from schools for each day a child is sick!  Right now California takes needed funds from our school for each excused absence.  It does not cost the school one dime less to have a child not in school. This is nothing more than a money grab by the State and it needs to stop now!

2.  Repeal prop 39 and protect our public schools from the unchecked growth of charter schools.  Don't allow charters to grab needed space from overcrowded public schools!

3.  Vote yes on AB 39 but amend it to ADD A TIMELINE to bring our state funding up to the level where it needs to be.  According to Stanford research we need a 39% increase in funding for California students to meet learning standards.  Make that happen now!
