Government to do more to tackle climate change than just electric ports in new builds

The Issue

Climate change is no longer 'just a problem of the future'; it’s already here & the effects are already happening, as so many people at COP this year attested. If its effects are not stopped/significantly slowed then MILLIONS of people round the world will die, either because of raised sea levels/extreme weather leading to flooding or droughts causing starvation.

The richest 1st world countries, like the UK & USA, are largely to blame because of the emissions released by our developing technologies over the decades. The poorest countries, who have contributed the least to climate change emissions are the 1st & hardest hit. It is the responsibility of the rich 1st world countries to hence do MORE than the bare minimum, more than “their share” of the world to try & cancel out our significant emissions of the past, so that even people alive today don't see the planet becoming a hostile environment to all life.

Solar energy is officially the worlds cheapest electricity method since 2020 - not only is it zero emissions it is cheaper electricity than coal, gas, nuclear, wind, wave, hydro, etc. & it can also be generated locally on roofs, & used at night if stored in house batteries. In a single hour, the amount of power from the sun that strikes the Earth is more than the entire world consumes in an year!

What needs to happen? What do we want the government to do?

A huge step in the right direction is removing traffic fossil fuel emissions by switching to zero emissions electric cars, so the UK government's very recent move to enforce all new build houses have electric car charging ports is a start, but only a small one. It is just as vital to ensure that the electric cars are charged by zero emissions renewable energy, & that our homes individual Carbon Footprints are reduced to almost zero. To this end, we require the following changes by the government:

In addition to making it mandatory that ALL new house builds include an electric car charging port, ALSO:

1. Mandate ALL new houses to have installed fully solar roofs (every square inch of roof covered with either solar panels, or the more aesthetically pleasing ‘invisible’ solar tiles which can replace normal tiles entirely) & installed house batteries (to provide 24 hour a day & night reliable & stable locally created zero emissions electricity) capable of producing, & storing, more than 100% of the electricity the household is likely to need. Not only will this reduce the carbon footprint, it will also massively reduce fuel poverty, which dramatically effects more than 1 in 4 people in the UK, & this electricity can then be used to also charge the electric cars, as well as household items, like heating.

2. Mandate all new homes to also be insulated to Energy performance certificate (EPC) "A" grade, with a vertical ground source heat pump installed at ALL new houses which has any garden, no matter how small, because of their greater efficiency & reliability, or air source heat pumps on new houses/flats which have zero land.

By legally enforcing the above regulations for ALL new builds, this will create a huge number of new well paid and skilled jobs with businesses dedicated to developing/building/installing these technologies, it will also create competition and  dramatically lower the price of these climate saving technologies for the rest of us, so we have a chance to get them for our own existing homes! And all this in addition to removing the barriers to people switching to all electric vehicles, which was the purpose of making EV ports mandatory in the first place.

Summary

Go forward with the mandate for all new homes to have to install electric car charging ports, but ALSO add to that legal mandate for ALL new homes: must install fully solar roofs and house battery sufficient for 100% generation of electricity needs for that house, EPC “A” grade insulation and install a ground source heat pump in any property with any land, or air source where not.
