Preventing Unnecessary Loss: Bring Mental Health Crisis Resources to Rural NL

The mental health care system in our province is sorely lacking resources for those in mental health crisis in rural areas. We need more than just a phone line in the capital city; we desperately need Crisis Management resources in smaller centres.

Our loved ones are dying because there are simply not enough resources outside of the metro area. A walk-in counselling program once every two weeks is NOT sufficient. People with mental illness cannot plan their hardest moments around when a counsellor might be available to them. Many people are suffering and we need tangible programs to help those who need it, when they need it. Changes are coming to our health care system, but what do we do in the interim?

We call upon the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to step up and take immediate action regarding the implementation of Mobile Crisis Units in every hospital in our province. Crisis teams would be on call 24/7, in St. John’s as well, and available to provide crisis intervention and/or retrieve an individual in crisis who might need to be taken to safety.  We need more than a phone line for the entire population; we need people who can help us when we need it most.
