The Issue

The intersection of Balsam Avenue, Highway 22 and Highway 758 (“the 4-Way Stop”) requires a comprehensive solution to improve its design and function.  As many Bragg Creek and area residents or visitors to Bragg Creek have experienced, the ingress and egress through the 4-Way Stop has become increasingly more frustrating and dangerous because of the increase in traffic volume.  Primarily on weekends, holidays and special events, Bragg Creek suffers from driver fatigue due to the inordinate amount of time it takes traffic to clear the 4-Way Stop.

The traffic situation at the 4-Way Stop is not new.  Back in October 2012, Alberta Transportation conducted an Intersection Improvement Study that evaluated seven alternatives.  The number one recommended alternative is to construct an oblong roundabout at Hwy 22/Hwy758/Burnside Drive and a 3-legged roundabout at Hwy 22/Balsam Avenue.  The cost to construct both roundabouts was estimated to be approximately $2MM.  No Tsuu t’ina lands are required for the two roundabouts.
