Abortion is a top issue in the US midterm election. As Americans head to the polls today to vote, many fear the impact election outcomes will have on abortion laws. 

Polls show that 50% of American voters say that the US Supreme Court overturn of Roe v. Wade has motivated them to vote this year. Millions of people across the US have lost their bodily autonomy and access to safe abortion care because of this ruling. 

This overturning also sent the question of abortion back to the states to determine laws and policies for abortion. The election of governors will have profound consequences. Restrictive abortion laws are being fought in several states, particularly Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Kansas. 

While supporting our US neighbours, it’s also important that we look at their own access to abortion across Canada. It’s vital that we continue to do everything we can to protect and expand access to abortion in Canada.
