While being in prison many people are killing themselves or after being released the traumatic experiences replay in their heads and lead them to depression. Depression without any help eventually leads them to suicide. Rates of prison suicides are four times higher than suicides in the general population. Allowing for counselors , that actually want to help and not just get a paycheck, to be in the prison facilities can help decrease the number of suicides inside the facility. More activities that’ll get them more involved instead of sitting behind bars facing harsh and cruel treatment should also be allowed. Counseling should also be free for those who have just been released. People like Kalief Browder, who was held in Rikers Island for being accused of stealing a backpack, was held three years without a trial and 2/3 years he spent in solitary confinement. He was so traumatized by these events at Rikers that he hung himself, because he couldn’t stop the playbacks of the horrid events that he was involved in while in jail. A change needs to happen !
