Allow IN residents to receive, "In Reason We Trust" license plates

The Issue

Currently, IN residents may select the license plate, "In God We Trust" (IGWT) for no additional charge. In the interest of equal rights for those who do not trust in a god, IN residents should have the option to select the license plate, "In Reason We Trust" (IRWT) for no additional charge as well. IRWT is now an option in both Oklahoma and South Carolina.

IGWT does not reflect the views of everyone that lives in this state. In fact, recent estimates suggest that 15% of people do not believe in god.

Not allowing IN residents the option of IRWT license plates alienates atheists in this state that do not trust in god. However, IRWT is not just a plate that atheists can appreciate. After all, theists should trust in reason as well. Human reasoning is responsible for centuries of scientific progress that benefit people in their daily lives. Therefore, trusting in reason is a concept that every American can rally behind.

Not allowing IN residents to obtain a free IRWT license plate gives preferential treatment to theists. Preferential treatment places the government in the position of endorsing the religious view that god exists. The government is mandated by the constitution to not endorse religion. Specificially, supplying the license plate IGWT without an IRWT alternative restricts freedom of religion as outlined in the 1st Amendment and denies equal protection of laws as outlined in the 14th Amendment that are supposed to protect theists and atheists alike from undue religious influence by the government. Furthermore, IGWT was not adopted as a national motto until it was signed into law during the Eisenhower administration in 1956 so it in no way reflects the ideas of our founding fathers.

It is time for the government to allow the promotion of a concept that everyone should agree is important. We, the undersigned, ask that you allow IN residents to purchase an IRWT license plate because reason is something that every American can trust in.

Thank you.
