On March 27, 2025, at long last, the National Park Service included Mauna Kea also on the National Register of Historic Places as both a TCP ( traditional cultural property) and Historic District.

A TCP is eligible for official registers of historic places based on rooted-ness "in a traditional community's history and importance in maintaining the continuing cultural identity of the community."

In 2023, KAHEA & Mauna Kea Anaina Hou, in partnership with Huliauapa'a, succeeded in getting Mauna Kea listed as a Traditional Cultural Property (TCP) on the Hawaii state Historic Register/

Since then, we've worked toward the same recognition on the US federal register.
