Google Maps provides travel routes, navigation and travel time estimates for a range of transport modes, including cars, bicycles and walking. The transport options also include trains and even planes, but no information is currently provided for people travelling on motorcycles.

We at Carole Nash are calling for Google to introduce travelling on a motorcycle as part of its Maps service to meet the needs of 1.25 million bikers in the UK.

Motorcycles are able to move through traffic, so journey times are often quicker, especially in cases of heavy congestion in major cities. We believe these shorter travel times should be accounted for on Google Maps.

We are pleased to see initial trials of a motorcycle feature for the Indian version of Google Maps, but with several crowded cities in this country, there is a real need to bring the facility to the UK.

Travelling by a powered two-wheeler can save a significant amount of time, with studies showing that motorcycle travel in major European cities can reduce journey time by two-thirds, compared to travel by car. Powered two-wheelers can also help to disperse traffic to the benefit of all road users, including cars and buses.
