Gonzaga University Administration and
Why this petition matters

Started by Gonzaga University College Republicans
Problem
Gonzaga University has rejected our College Republican Chapter's request to host ben Shapiro on our campus. We believe this is a threat to free speech and free thinking and urge the university to repeal their decision.
Mr. Shapiro was denied on behalf of the university's mission statement and for safety concerns. We believe Mr. Shapiro's presence fulfills the values of the university, contrary to the reasons administration denied him upon. We want to cultivate a culture of nuanced perspectives and engaging - while sometimes controversial - discussion.
We need your help in petitioning Gonzaga to host ben Shapiro and promote a climate where we can learn and explore new ideas and celebrate everyone's right to free speech.
The Office of Event Coordination provided the following reasons for rejecting Mr. Shapiro:
The decision to deny this request is supported by at least four provisions spelled out within Gonzaga’s Events Policy: a.i.1 and 2 -- Contrary to Gonzaga’s Catholic/Jesuit mission and values: Mr. Shapiro’s appearances routinely draw protests that include extremely divisive and hateful speech and behavior which is offensive to many people, regardless of their age, politics or beliefs.
Gonzaga University is committed to the human dignity of every individual. This is the core of our mission, based on the teachings of Christ Jesus, and the foundations of the Society of Jesus. We stand in solidarity with vulnerable members of our community who may be targeted for discrimination, ridicule, or harassment by others.
a.i. 3 and 4 -Safety and security: Gonzaga University must prevent our campus from becoming a hostile environment for employees and students. Gonzaga’s events policy requires us to consider whether an event would pose substantial risk to the safety of any member of our campus community. In light of what has occurred on other campuses, our security team has raised questions about whether we can adequately secure a campus venue. We are committed to the safety and security of all campus events. We do not feel we can guarantee the level of security necessary for all.
Solution
Have Gonzaga University's President, Thayne McCulloh, appeal the decision to ban Ben Shapiro from speaking on campus.
Personal story
We are the Gonzaga University College Republicans. We are the only club on campus who is fighting hard to ensure free and diverse thinking in a culture of indoctrination disguised as academia! As students, we are tasked with both studies and fighting for free speech - we need everyone's help to support us in our endeavor.
