Stop Prof Meirion Thomas disrespecting GPs, female and overseas doctors in the media
The Issue
Prof Meirion Thomas states that General Practice is no longer fit for purpose in his recent Daily Mail article. He says:
"What exactly do our 40,000 GPs do that makes their services so essential to the NHS? Do they spend all their day making complex diagnoses? Hardly."
His lack of respect for fellow doctors is abhorrent. To suggest that GPs are simply box ticking to blindly refer any patient we may have concerns about is ridiculous, and belittles the fine art of our speciality; the uncertainty we tolerate, the support we offer to families, the primary prevention and long term conditions we manage effectively to keep people living for longer, and the care we offer for dying patients. To suggest that all palliative care should be handed over to an anonymous nurse would be extremely upsetting and detrimental to patients who should be cared for by a family doctor emotionally connected to them. He says that we are acting as "amateur psychologists" to the worried well; this has always been an important part of General Practice, the ability to reassure such patients without performing tests and referrals requires considerable skill, and avoids Outpatients and Accident and Emergency attendances.
He also predicts the demise of General Practice to come if more GPs from overseas are recruited, again showing absolute disrespect for the many competent GPs who have trained overseas.
All this follows on from a similarly "controversial" article in January where he states that the predominance of female doctors is ruining the NHS, and insinuates that all female GP mothers should return to work full time as they can afford the childcare.
The GMC Duties of a Doctor document states:
35. You must work collaboratively with colleagues, respecting their skills and contributions.
36. You must treat colleagues fairly and with respect.
37. You must be aware of how your behaviour may influence others within and outside the team.
His failure on all three of these components needs highlighting to the GMC.
Please sign this petition to stop Prof Meirion Thomas from writing any more damaging articles about fellow doctors, female doctors and doctors from overseas. The results of this petition will be forwarded to the GMC for further action.
