Around 12.7 million tonnes of plastic are entering the ocean every year, killing over 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals.

By 2050 there could be more plastic in the ocean than fish by weight.

The law passed in Britain to add cost to unnecessary plastic bags has taken us a long way, and real progress has been made.

However, progress needs to be faster. To stop the environment becoming irreversibly changed for the worse, we need to do more.

There are already three villages in the UK who do not issue plastic bags to customers, and many countries including Kenya, and many cities including Montreal in Canada have made plastic bags illegal to buy. 

Banning plastic bags in Gloucester is a realistic aim that we can achieve. It is a starting point from which we can make a real difference, and stop plastic pollution causing the havoc and misery that is otherwise inevitable.
