As a result of massive Russian bombardments of recent weeks, half of the buildings in the Ukrainian capital remain without heating. According to data from the mayor, 600,000 people have recently left Kyiv, which has a population of 3.6 million.
According to state energy company Ukrenergo, apart from Kyiv, the worst situation with electricity is in the Kyiv and Poltava regions and in the frontline areas of Kharkiv, Sumy, Czernihiv and Donetsk.
This is a deliberate and planned policy by Russia, aimed at punishing Ukraine and cutting off the country's electricity and heating supply during one of the harshest winters in years, with temperatures falling to -20°C in some places.
Ukrainians are doing everything they can to survive - they are organising mutual aid, helping the most vulnerable people and animals, gathering in «resilience centres», while energy workers are doing their utmost to restore power to the extent possible.
We invite you to a meeting were we are going to talk about the current situation. Our guests will be:
Cristina Mas: journalist from the Catalan newspaper "Ara", who recently came back from Ukraine
Speakers from Ukraine (we will confirm the names in the coming days)
