Today, A tax accountant at YB Consulting, Mr Park Young-Boem, said:
Even before the facts were clearly revealed, amidst the media and the internet flooding with crude accusations of "moral laxity," we're forgetting one crucial fact: Cha Eun-woo is also a citizen of the Republic of Korea, a "taxpayer" entitled to the protection of the law.
There's a stark difference between "amended returns," which result in higher taxes due to simple accounting errors or misinterpretations of tax laws, and the more serious "tax evasion," which involves concealing assets and manipulating accounting records. The presumption of innocence should apply without immediately damaging an individual's reputation to the point of irreparable harm simply because someone is a celebrity.
The National Tax Basic Act of the Republic of Korea stipulates the "presumption of taxpayer integrity" and the "right to confidentiality." The tax audit process is strictly confidential in principle. What's needed now isn't emotional slinging. It's a mature civic consciousness that ensures the tax authorities are conducting a fair investigation and that Cha Eun-woo, as a taxpayer, is given a fair opportunity to explain himself and receive justice.
Cha Eun-woo is a citizen before he is a star. If everyone should be equal before taxes, then so should everyone's rights during tax audits. Just because he's famous, he should stop being guillotined by public opinion before he can exercise his legitimate right to defend himself. Cha Eun-woo also has the "taxpayer's right" to presumption of innocence and to pursue due process.
