Give Nick Wrack the right to reply to Owen Jones on sectarianism in Momentum

The Issue

In his latest opinion article for the Guardian, Owen Jones worries that Momentum -- the organisation set up in the aftermath of Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership victory last year -- is facing a “takeover bid” by Trotskyist groups who feel threatened by online democracy.

At a time when this nascent left wing movement is looking for unity and a way forward, Jones chose to single out Nick Wrack, of the Southwark Momentum group, as a “sectarian leader”.

Jones subsequently directed a personal attack at Wrack on Twitter:

https://twitter.com/OwenJones84/status/806573926809796610

Such unsubstantiated criticisms can only inflame and prejudice what is a complex and nuanced discussion about the purpose and structure of Momentum in which Nick Wrack and many others are playing an active part. Advocates of online democracy point to the power of social media to host debates on important issues such as this, while critics fear that it gives undue influence to those, such as Owen Jones, who have a high profile in the media.

In the interests of a balanced debate, we call on the Guardian to offer a platform to Nick Wrack to challenge Owen Jones’s criticisms and to offer his own interpretation of the choices facing Momentum today to be published in the Opinion section.
