Wash, rinse, and repeat. We have fought for ongoing stimulus payments, we have won a couple one-time checks, and then we have to immediately go back and do it all again. But, something is different this time: Senator Wyden who has not been outspoken in the past is now a new champion of recurring checks. Click here to urge your Senators to sign on to Senator Wyden’s letter to President Biden.
Senator Wyden is calling for automatic direct relief payments and enhanced unemployment insurance. The key here is his call includes automatic stabilizers – triggers that would make checks happen without Congress debating for months. In a recent poll, nearly 6 in 10 voters agree payments should be tied to economic conditions, with direct stimulus payments made when economic indicators like the unemployment rate show that we are in a recession. The general public and economic experts agree that this is the way to go. Urge your Senator to stand up and be counted as one of those supporters.
In Senator Wyden’s letter, he writes to President Biden asking to include recurring direct payments tied to economic conditions in his Build Back Better long-term economic plan. My favorite part of the letter is that he writes, “this crisis is far from over, and families deserve certainty that they can put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads. Families should not be at the mercy of constantly-shifting legislative timelines and ad hoc solutions.”
Imagine if we could have some stability to plan for the unknown up ahead?
Thank you,
Stephanie
