Save Gilberto Das Neves Jardin from deportation
An Armley man who faces deportation after living in the UK for 17 years says he is facing a "living hell" as he waits up to six months for the Home Office to decide his future.

Portuguese-Venezuelan Gilberto das Neves-Jardin fears he will be killed if he is deported to Portugal, as he originally fled the island of Madeira in 2004 after an armed robber shot him in the pelvis.

But the 47-year-old has faced deportation since 2016 after two short bouts in prison for harassment and motoring offences led the Home Office to strip him of his status - and prevented him from working or claiming benefits since 2018.
Now the Home Office has told the former welder it will decide on an appeal against his deportation within six months - with Mr das Neves-Jardin describing his life as a "living hell" while he waits.

"I live in a room, I feel like a prisoner," he told LeedsLive.

"The Home Office has destroyed my life. I've worked here for 14 years and paid my taxes.

"I can't pay bills, my credit score is at zero, I don't have money. It feels subhuman."
His lawyer VICTORIA FOSTER (LIBERTY SOLICITORS) previously told LeedsLive the Home Office has left Mr das Neves-Jardin "destitute" by stripping his status.

"Mr Gilberto has been treated particularly unfairly by the Home Office and the Immigration Courts," she said.

A Home Office spokesman previously told LeedsLive: "Foreign criminals who abuse our hospitality should be in no doubt of our determination to deport them.

"Any foreign national who is convicted of a crime and given a prison sentence is considered for deportation at the earliest opportunity, and since January 2019 we have removed 7,240 foreign national offenders from the UK."

He said he often has flashbacks to when he was shot.

Mr das Neves-Jardin thanked business owners in Armley who have supported him while he has been unable to work.

"They feel so sorry about this situation," he said. "These people have big hearts."
