I started this petition exactly 7 months ago and I want to thank all of you for your support! We now have 49K supporters and I strongly believe that we can make a difference! I can't do anything much on my own but with all your help, we CAN do it!
I understand that plastics bags have already became a part of our daily lives. I mean you wouldn't want to just stuff your fish in your shopping bag without a plastic bag around it right? Don't worry, we dislike that idea of doing that. Many people opposed to the idea of supermarkets charging for every plastic bag at the check out. But we are not going to give up.
We can start small, every small effort counts.
A New Proposal
I would like to propose an idea where supermarkets in Singapore could have a no-plastic-bag day and everyone could bring their own recyclable bags to contain their groceries. This no-plastic-bag day could take place on a certain week day every week. On this day, the checkout section of the supermarket could stop providing plastic bags to the consumers/charge consumers for the plastic bags. This is to raise awareness on how much we are relying on plastic bags and the negative impact it has on our environment. This is also an opportunity to encourage consumers to bring their own bags for their groceries.
Most of the plastic bags given out at the check out were only used once and thrown away. When these plastic bags are not disposed of in the correct manner, pollution of land and water may occur. This is very harmful to our environment.
Plastic bags take 100 years to biodegrade and burning of plastic bags at landfills generates harmful and poisonous gases into our atmosphere. This will lead to global warming. You might be thinking right now, how bad can it get? Well let me tell you how bad it actually got. Ice caps are melting, sea levels are rising, floods have become more common as well as other natural disasters. The temperature of the sea has also increased and coral reefs are dying. Sea creatures that cannot adapt to the increasing temperature are dying too. Water bodies like lakes are drying up, land animals die. Many animal species are going extinct every second! With the Earth temperature constantly increasing every year, we may lose our precious planet.
Where did the planet that you promised your great grand children go? Where is all of that beautiful greenery? What are you going to give to your future generations? OUR future generations. Polluted air, land and water. Dying animals. Floods. A planet that felt as if it's being baked in the oven. Is this what you want to give to them? Please save this planet. Give our children, our grandchildren and our future generations a beautiful and sustainable home.
