PLASTIC BAN: Want big retailers and super markets under the scanner

The Issue

Planet or Plastic:We made Plastic. We depend on it. And Now We're drowning in it. An article written by Laura Parker on National Geographic https://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2018/06/plastic-planet-waste-pollution-trash-crisis/.

If this doesn't stir you, then what will?We are a group of resident volunteers working to make our community plastic free. Our regular efforts with flea markets and local vendors come to a stand still when a poverty stricken vegetable vendor questions why the big super markets are not under the scanner?

Why super markets and big departmental stores not switching to eco-friendly packaging measures? Why are they still using plastic?Just because these plastics are above 50 microns,do they become environmental friendly?

In recent light we have seen, big departmental stores using so called "Non- woven carry bags" for vegetables and fruits weighing and packaging. They are single use bags, disposed irresponsibly and equally harmful for the environment.

Here are the points to ponder on and need an action plan for it.

  1. Complete Plastic Ban for big vendors and retailers such as  Vijetha,Ratnadeep,Spar,More, departmental stores like Max,Lifestyle,Shoppers Stop etc etc.Reduce individual packing of fruits and vegetables and other items as much as possible.
  2. A complete Ban on Non-woven carry bags used for vegetables and fruits packaging, which too has plastic content and is non biodegradable
  3. Invest in alternate packaging methods which are plant-waste based and completely bio-degradable.To employ eco-friendly methods.
  4. Regulation on cross-check of plastic bags with less than 50 microns and imposing heavy levies for those using above 50 micron.
  5. Retailers to promote by giving incentives on return of all plastics,by the customers at the source
  6. Need of more Plastic recycling units than manufacturing units.

We as a community need to join hands to make a bigger impact for societal change.Hoping to get more support.Thank you
