In Dec 2018 an employee of the Cherry Brook Zoo in Saint John, NB killed 18 guinea pigs by bludgeoning them to death. The zoo is stating that they were humanely killed and this is a procedure that they complete every few months. They use the small animals as food for other animals. (Is the Zoo saying that because chickens, cows and pigs are killed for human consumption that it’s ok for people to abuse them because the animals are going to die anyways)  However if that were the truth the NBSPCA wouldn’t have suggested charges be laid. ..“Officers with the SPCA gathered information and evidence, with the organization ultimately recommending that charges be laid for inhumane euthanasia and causing unnecessary pain and suffering. On Wednesday, the SPCA says they were notified that after review by the Crown prosecutors, there will be no pending chargesIn a statement, the Board of Trustees at Cherry Brook Zoo said they were always confident that their rules and procedures have “aligned with the policies and guidelines set forth by Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA). I find it hard to believe that CAZA considers bludgeoning animals to death as humane..

Rightfully the Zoo and the person in question should be charged under the Criminal code of Canada. See below. There is not one word in the criminal code that says bludgeoning animals to death is ok.

R.S.C., 1985, c. C-46 (Section 445) Marginal note:
Injuring or endangering other animals
445 (1) Every one commits an offence who, wilfully and without lawful excuse,
(a) kills, maims, wounds, poisons or injures dogs, birds or animals that are kept for a lawful purpose; or
(b) places poison in such a position that it may easily be consumed by dogs, birds or animals that are kept for a lawful purpose.

So why did the Crowne drop the charges? Politics maybe Saint John is a small community and  Martha Mcdevitt, executive director of the Zoo may cross paths with a few people in power. (I by no means am saying this is what happened) I’m am merely making a comment.

Why does the NBSPCA exist? I mean they found with their evidence the Zoo and employee were guilty. Clearly what they say makes no difference to the crowne because they overrode them and found the zoo not guilty. Why bother spending the money on a group of people that their words and findings mean nothing to the courts?

In January 2017 in the United States two teens were charged for killing a guinea pig.  This judge clearly understood animal cruelty and there was nothing humane about hurting innocent animals.

Grosse Ile teens get probation for killing guinea pig
Detroit — Two Grosse Ile teens received probation for killing a guinea pig last April.

Third Circuit Judge David Groner gave Tanner Coolsaet, 18, two years probation and Michael Roth, 17, three years probation as part of a youth offenders program sentencing Wednesday.
The teens also cannot have unsupervised contact with pets not their own.
The teens were each charged with two counts of killing/torturing an animal and conspiracy to kill/torture an animal, both felonies, for killing a guinea pig to bring them luck before a lacrosse match.
The teens faced a maximum of four years in prison and a $5,000 fine for each count.
The judge noted Wednesday the teens didn’t have prior criminal records and were good students from good families, but said he put off the sentencing by for a while to make sure there were no “deep-seated issues” that needed to be addressed with the young defendants.
Groner told the teens “that little guinea pig didn’t deserve this, that’s for sure.”
Both teens apologized and pledged to donate $1,000 each to the Michigan Humane Society.

Please bring Justice to the 18 animals that did not deserve to die in such a cruel horrible manner. You can do this by sharing the petition and by boycotting the Cherry Brook Zoo.  All zoos are becoming a thing of the past as people see the cruelty in them. Animals belong in sanctuaries where they are taken care of.

Thank you you for taking the time to help the animals who suffered in the mere hands of the people who were supposed to be taking care of them.
