After presenting multiple ideas and commentary about suggested alterations by you our valued signers, historians, arcitechs, philosophers, artists and multigenerational supporters and advocates of inclusion - ideas presented to Eric Frances and Neal Hitch of Bethel Woods, we decided to go all in and leave this depiction of The Woodstock Monument Reimagined.
After an hour and a half this is the concept we left them with and they took to discuss among board members.
Youll notice minor differences. Wayne's plaque was moved to bottom. A two segment plaque was put in place of it. Listing the four performers who were overlooked in the original. The four producers were put underneath those performers. Sebastion's spelling was corrected. The fourth date was added as Sha-Na-Na, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, and Jimi Hendrix, played after midnight on Sunday.
Also we added Max Yasgur name who saved the production by renting his property to Woodstock Ventures after Woodstock and Walkill dropped out.
Wayne Saward was paid $650 to do his sculture based on Arnold Skolnick's iconic poster and he originally had Max's name on the monument when he brought the finished product to June Gelis for payment she met him with her lawyer and demanded he remove Max's name or he wouldn't get paid!
We tried to make our reimagined monument historically accurate and not change the integrity of the original. Bethel Woods did not accept the design on the spot because of legal, historical and other factors but we established a beach head.
They express their belief that these names should be historically immortalized maybe in a differerent format. One idea thrown about with some others, was an entirely new historically accurate monument placed some else on the grounds or in the museum itself.
My creative consultant and I Billy Lucano knew our presentation was received in a good and appreciative way and has established the path for future collaboration. Our fight is not over. Its just beginning as we take it to the next level by enlisting the support of legislators and other powers and shakers who can help make this happen!
