No Place of Public Worship In Botany Street Carlton

No Place of Public Worship In Botany Street Carlton

The issue

We ask your support in preventing the use of the old nursing home and the house next door at 90-92 Botany Street as a place of public worship. The venue will be used daily from 5:30am-10pm by bringing an influx of noise and traffic to the quiet street. We oppose this because:

-We fear for the safety of our children and local community members and for our peaceful streets and way of life.

- We are surrounded by four schools, Bethany College, Sydney Technical High School, St Marys Star of the Sea Primary School and Hurstville Public schools and childcare centres in adjoining streets with hundreds of children and parents using this street as a thoroughfare by both vehicular and foot traffic to get to and from school, school functions and mass at St Michaels Church.

-The increased traffic and congestion to the area poses a threat to the safety of the residents and locals especially children. In the past 5 years we have had two children die in adjoining streets and don't wish it to occur in our street with the schools so close to this mosque.

- Our streets have already been impacted with increased traffic flow due to the increased housing structures that have created further congestion and traffic flow regularly using Botany Street as a bypass to main Forest Rd and Durham Street. This will only increase as further work is underway on existing construction sites and those that have been approved in the surrounding area.

- Users of Carlton and Allawah Stations also use Botany streets and associated streets as thoroughfares for vehicle and foot access.

- Our peaceful, quiet streets will become hives of activity nightly especially during special occasions like Ramadan, with increased disruption and increased noise levels that are beyond our control or influence.

- Prayer times commence early morning and will continue until evening and the mosque will be in use during the day for community events which will see increased traffic and noise both vehicular and foot at all hours of the day every day.

- The mosque does not fit in with the street, the character of the street, the locals and where we see our community growing.  The increased activity and intended use of this site is not welcome.

The local residents oppose this and request your support in preventing the place of public worship from going ahead.
