Hello all 273,598 of you!!!! Some BIG news happened yesterday: when addressing Parliament and announcing the new budget, George Osborne mentioned this petition. He said that “300000 people have signed a petition arguing that no VAT should be placed on sanitary products...and we are committed to getting the EU to change its regulations.” In doing so, he addressed his speech to each and every one of you and promised to keep fighting for the end of tampon tax at an EU level. This is good news and shows our voices are being heard at the highest level. But we’ve got to keep up the pressure on the government to get the tax scrapped as soon as we can. Illogically, Osborne also announced that in the meantime, the £15m we spend on tampon tax will go to charities that 'help women'. This includes organisations that work to reduce domestic violence, which is of course a societal issue and not one exclusively for, or faced by, women. The important work these charities do should be funded regardless. This tax needs to end, and should not be substituted with a mandatory charity tax for those who have periods. However, this is a step forward in ensuring a male dominated parliament don't profit from our menstrual cycles. It also shows that Parliament are taking steps in fighting back against this tax, even if their logic is somewhat backward. Thank you for all of your continued support that has made some real positive change! Please keep signing and sharing - we took a small step closer to victory yesterday and it wouldn’t have been possible without your help. We have also received over 400 amazing letters from you all, addressed to the EU to keep up the pressure. THANK YOU!!! This response has been amazing. Please keep it up so that this time in six months, we can celebrate the END of tampon tax. Period!
