Abolish UK Air Passenger Duty

The UK has the higher air passenger tax in the world. This stifles tourism and sends the message that the UK is not 'open for business.' APD is due to increase to an incredible £142 PER PERSON for flights over 2,000 miles from April 2015, which includes flights to the USA and Caribbean. This will affect not only holidaymakers but those with families from overseas, whom they may no longer be able to afford to visit, or whose families will no longer be able to afford to visit them. Chinese tourists can substantially reduce the cost of a visit to Europe by visiting other EU countries who have no APD or for the just five who do, at a much much lower rate. Many countries have abolished APD because of the effect it had on their economies, and Continental Airlines has admitted that it would have quit Belfast Airport if the NI Parliament has not abolished their APD. Scotland and Wales will soon have the option to set their own APD, and they will almost certainly either abolish or severely reduce it. This would leave England as the only 'high tax on flights' country in the UK.
Abolish this draconian tax, or at least reduce it to a more reasonable simple percentage, like 5% of the flight cost.
