The Amazon Rainforest is being cleared at an alarming rate to make way for cattle farming. But regen ranching could save it!
While cattle contribute to the destruction of the Amazon today, we know now that cattle can be beneficial when used right. In what Savory calls brittle enviornments, environments which are not humid for large parts of the year, grazing animals are important for the cycle of decay. We should move cattle out of the amazon basin and used them to regenerate grasslands across South America; in the cerrado for example.
But the exact opposite is happening. In clearing the rainforest we are detroying the amazons ability to produce moisture. Above the rainforest there is an atmospheric river which is fueled by all the leaves that transpire water into the atmosphere. When the amazon loses 20 to 25 percent of its forest cover it will die off and become a savannah. Currently we are at around 17 percent. And worse still this could occur by 2050. There are several good documentaries representing the science on this and I recommend you check them out. I'll leave a link to information on one below.
Monbiot, you could help save the amazon by supporting regenerative ranching! If we act quickly we can save the amazon from certain destruction. Instead of changing peoples diets, we could shift the way we grow beef. It's up to us. But the clock is ticking. https://e360.yale.edu/features/2025-film-contest-third-place-amazon-tipping-point
