The plight of our last remaining wildflower meadows is perilous; Plantlife report that 75% of remaining meadows occur in small fragments and, due to poor protection, remain extremely vulnerable to destruction.
That’s the bad news. Thankfully there is a rapidly increasing awareness of meadows’ stunning and unique value. There’s a real buzz around meadows right now and that’s set to reach fever pitch TONIGHT when Gardeners’ World dedicate a hour-long primetime TV show to the wonderful world of wildflowers. Please do tune in to BBC Two at 21.00 to catch Monty Don celebrating meadows.
Gardeners' World tonight caps a big week for meadows. Just last Friday The Today Programme – the BBC’s flagship, agenda-setting news show – interviewed Dr Trevor Dines from Joan’s Hill, a stunning ancient meadow in Herefordshire. His passion and enthusiasm for magnificent meadows resonated deeply with nature-lovers; the following day people flocked to National Meadows Day events across the UK and the hashtag trended on Twitter.
