No recycling ♻️ center in Flint Michigan

Here’s where we stand on the proposed Recycling and Education Center at 609 Chavez Drive as of September 29.

People Powered Flint sent the county seven written questions following the September 22 meeting. We’re asking for the reports comparing other locations, the review of existing contamination and proposed bioswales, spill and firefighting runoff protections, specific permits and approvals, and how health equity factored into choosing this site.

We also asked the question that matters for public participation: Is this location still open for reconsideration, and what can residents actually change?

We also submitted comments on the county’s draft Public Participation Plan asking for earlier public involvement, direct notice to nearby residents, clearer notice requirements and written responses to substantive comments. The county acknowledged those comments on September 17 and said they would be considered during review. 

Our requests for support have gone to Clean Water Action and the NAACP’s Environmental and Climate Justice team. We’re still waiting for replies. Those requests aren’t commitments of support.

The petition signatures have not been formally submitted yet. We’ll share confirmation when that happens.

Flint needs safe recycling and disposal services. Residents also deserve a documented explanation of why this location was chosen, how the river and surrounding community will be protected, and whether their concerns can change the decision.
