Last summer, I watched the HBO Sports documentary and now Emmy nominated "Back on Board: Greg Louganis." Filmmakers Will Sweeney and Cheryl Furjanic told the thoughtful and compelling story of the diving legend and his struggles over the last couple decades since winning one silver and four gold Olympic medals. A scene in the documentary stuck with me. At the Swimming Hall of Fame, Greg passes by a series of Wheaties boxes with various Olympic athletes from the swimming and diving world and softly mentions, “never got a Wheaties box,” In that moment, I was inspired to start a campaign asking General Mills to ‘Put Greg Louganis on the Wheaties Box’.
With overwhelming gratitude, I would like to thank the 43,834 people who joined my campaign.
I’m proud to announce that the campaign was a success! Today, @Wheaties will have a press release to unveil a #WheatiesLegends Campaign to begin with a legacy photo of Greg Louganis on the Wheaties box! Congratulations to Greg, as well as Janet Evans and Edwin Moses! I can share with you that he is beside himself with excitement!
A big thank you to Matt McGibney with Change.org, Richard Sandomir with the NY Times, Bill Littlefield with Boston’s NPR, GLAAD, and the Elizabeth Taylor Foundation for the support and PR. You helped put a fire under the campaign and get my grassroots effort noticed! I’d also like to thank the General Mills executives that took the time to meet with me and discuss our box of over 41k signatures.
Again, congratulations to Greg! Now, who wants to help me start a campaign to get Greg on Dancing with the Stars? ;)
