My trip to Minneapolis to meet with General Mills executives went very well! The day started with a little press. I met with a couple news stations and answered questions about why I started the petition and my expectations. I explained the end goal is to put 4x Olympic medalist, Greg Louganis, on the Wheaties box. Later in the day, General Mills was gracious enough to sit down with me and discuss the petition. I explained the catalyst for the petition was the Back on Board: Greg Louganis documentary, and that I was there on behalf of you, the more than 41,000 supporters of my petition. While there are no decision makers left at General Mills today from the early to mid 80’s, the executives conveyed that the culture at General Mills has historically been progressive, even back in the 80’s. This included putting Mary Lou Retton on the box in 1984, the first woman to grace the cover. We had a very sincere conversation that covered General Mills decision-making today, and my request to find a way to honor Greg’s place in history and diving as the “Best Diver Ever” that was solidified in 1984 and 1988 at the LA Olympics. I explained Greg slammed open the door to diving and the huge impact his achievements have made to the sport of diving. The lines of communication are open now. We do not have specific commitments from General Mills, but they did acknowledge they are looking at a way to celebrate Greg and his place in history. Hopefully, more to come.
