Hi everyone!
We’ve just learned that a Conservative MP, Maria Caulfield, will be raising the issue of letting fees in the House of Commons this evening. She will lead a debate taking place at 10pm this evening.
It’s great that a Conservative MP is drawing attention to this issue. However, Maria is calling for regulation of fees and not a ban. We here at The Debrief feel that letting fees should be banned, as they are in Scotland.
There is no evidence that the ban will cause rents to go up, as those who oppose our proposal continue to argue. Indeed, if anything, analysis by Your Move from last month in Scotland showed that rents in the country were actually staying the same on average (https://www.your-move.co.uk/blog/january-2016-scottish-buy-to-let-index
The same cannot be said for England, where agents are free to charge what they like in terms of fees.
Letting fees are unjustified and unfair. They need to be banned, not regulated.
Please watch Maria discuss this at 10pm tonight using the link below. It would be great if you could tweet about it using the hashtag for this campaign #makerentingfair and say why you think unfair fees should be banned, not just regulated.
We’re working away on this, so please keep sharing the petition.
Thanks,
Vicky & The Debrief
