It's been over three months since I met with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, and I'm sorry to say that while the NHL is very aware of our concerns regarding sexual abuse and domestic violence, the league so far has not been spurred to greater or more immediate action. In the time since my meeting with the commissioner I have reached out to league officials in the hope of helping the NHL to facilitate change, but working behind the scenes just hasn't yielded results. I am disappointed but by no means discouraged! If the NHL isn't moved by the voices of 36,000 of its fans, perhaps it will be more inclined to listen to those of its member clubs. With that in mind, I'm asking you to help me reach out to the 30 teams that make up the league as well as the one preparing to join in 2017 in Las Vegas. Please take a moment to write a brief message to your favorite team and send it to hockeypetition@gmail.com by Friday, July 29. Let your team know that you will not cheer for abusers, that female fans are every bit as important as male ones, that the team has an obligation to be a positive force in its community. In your own words tell your team how it - and the league it belongs to - can and must be better. I will aggregate these messages and pass them along to the teams. Please indicate in your email whether or not you're willing to make your message public, as I'd like to feature some in a future petition update and also quote them (with attribution or anonymously, as you choose) in potential media interviews. I want to help make sure your voice is heard and heeded, and I will do everything in my power to make that happen.
