Electric All Ireland Minor Championship 2015 Semi-Final
Kildare Vs Tipperary
Date: Sun 30 , August 2015
Start Time: 1.30pm (Local)
Venue: Croke Park, Dublin
Kildare lost at the All-Ireland quarter-final stage in each of the last two seasons, so their 2-14 to 2-12 defeat of Cavan at the start of the month represented something of a breakthrough given the last time they made it through to the last four was way back in 1991. Under the guidance of Monaghan native Brendan Hackett, a former manager of the Westmeath senior football team and an ex-CEO of Athletics Ireland, Kildare have enjoyed a fairly arduous journey to the last four, having lost their opening Leinster Championship game to Louth on April 18, when they looked anything but All-Ireland contenders.
The Lilywhites bounced back with wins over Offaly (0-14 to 0-13) and Laois (1-10 to 1-9) before a very impressive 3-16 to 3-13 win over Dublin at Croke Park on June 28 confirmed Hackett had indeed assembled a side of real substance. In the Leinster final, Kildare eased past Longford by 2-15 to 1-9, with full-forward Jimmy Hyland scoring a magnificent seven points from play, while Ciarán Kelly also scored 1-2. Matthew Kelly, Ciarán Kelly and the superb Hyland (below), who has consistently racked up massive tallies, have been Kildare’s key attacking trio and will present Tipperary with a challenge unlike anything they have faced so far in the competition.
Tipperary beat Waterford and Clare in the Munster Championship, before losing to Kerry in the provincial final. That 2-14 to 1-11 defeat was something of a setback for the Charlie McKeever’s side, but it has only become clear in hindsight just how strong the reigning All-Ireland champions are once again this year. The result, in a way, was immaterial as Tipperary went through to an All-Ireland quarter-final clash with Connacht champions Galway, and duly produced a 1-10 to 0-6 victory, which forced another rethink of the Premier County’s credentials.
