It emerged this month that the GAA has been actively encouraging its member clubs to fundraise at greyhound tracks. A “GAA Fundraising Toolkit” guide has surfaced which shows that “A Day/Evening at the Races/Dogs” is being presented as a fundraising idea, with clubs told: “Members, supporters, friends and local business can all be invited to attend. A popular social event...On the day/evening itself there is the opportunity to hold additional raffles/draws – club sponsors and local business may be happy to assist with prizes.”
 
It directs clubs to the Irish Greyhound Board for more information.
 
In light of the well publicised gambling addiction epidemic in Ireland, including among GAA players, it is completely inappropriate for the GAA to suggest gambling venues.
 
Following the recent revelations about cruelty and killing on “RTE Investigates: Greyhounds Running for their lives”, the GAA must immediately remove greyhound racing from its fundraising guide.

In the past four years alone, 1,559 greyhounds have been injured and 506 were killed.
 
Club fundraisers are helping to keep cruel greyhound racing alive (tracks take a significant commission on ticket sales & profit from food/drink/gambling on the night).
