When the campus was created, there were no university sports teams and those looking to take part in competitive events were told to contact local teams in the area. Camborne School of Mines was and is an established rugby team in Cornwall, and it gratefully accepted the many students who wished to play. Since then, many other sports have taken on the CSM name including hockey, netball and football, some of the most popular sports in the country.
This year would bring about the 115th annual Bottle match between CSM and RSM. Bottle Match is the second oldest varsity match in the world. Since 1902 the only thing that prevented the game from being played was the Great War and since 2004 all CSM teams have been welcome to partake in this historic event.
This year, motions are being put in place to cancel Bottle Match and remove the CSM brand from the University teams. As a sporting community comprised of students from CSM, University of Exeter and Falmouth University, we do not agree with this. We believe that playing under CSM and taking part in the Bottle Match not only enhances our student experience while studying in Cornwall but gives us a sense of belonging to a wider community. Bottle match is more than simply a sporting event, more than a day, it is a culmination of over 100 years of a legacy which unifies both players and supporters alike. There is not a single event in the University calendar that brings together such a wide variety of the student body to support a single cause.
Bottle Match is much more than just a University sports competition it unites students and locals alike. It has become a huge part of Cornish history over the years holding great significance to all of Cornwall. In the rugby match alone it has been held in Cornwall 54 times being played by 3450 students all remembering the one match that truly mattered, not just to them, but for every Cornish rugby player, CSM alumni, and spectator.
Anyone that has experienced Bottle Match weekend and the weeks leading up to it knows it creates an atmosphere of excitement and opportunity to the whole campus, regardless of who you are. For many players, Bottle Match was one of the main contributing factors drawing us to study in Cornwall, in its absence we fear many potential applicants will miss out on the amazing opportunity it is to study here.
We need your support to keep this legacy moving forward to enhance the student experience
