Fund the Richmond public tennis courts upgrades
The Issue
We, the tennis players and residents of Richmond, BC, are calling on the City to urgently fund and execute comprehensive maintenance and safety upgrades for our public tennis courts.
Tennis is a vital, low-barrier sport that keeps our community active and healthy. However, Richmond’s outdoor hard courts have fallen into a severe state of disrepair. The current conditions are no longer just frustrating—they are becoming safety hazards that limit play and cause preventable injuries.
We are asking the City of Richmond to address the following critical infrastructure failures:
South Arm Tennis Courts: Requires a complete resurfacing. Deep, extensive cracking causes unpredictable, unplayable ball bounces. Additionally, the outdated lighting system needs immediate modernization to extend safe playing hours into the evening.
Thompson Park: Requires full resurfacing. Heavy wear has left the baselines completely smooth, worn out, and dangerously slippery. Like South Arm, the lighting here is inadequate and requires upgrading.
Hugh Boyd Park: One court has severely bulged and warped due to tree roots pushing up from underneath the asphalt, making the surface a major tripping hazard. The uneven surface has caused pools of water to form which can be hazardous for players.
City-Wide Wind & Visibility Upgrades:
All major public hard court facilities—including Minoru, Thompson, Hugh Boyd, South Arm, and King George—urgently need permanent windscreen netting installed on the fences. Windscreens are standard infrastructure that block out disruptive wind and provide the necessary contrast to safely track the ball.
By neglecting these courts, the City is restricting access to safe recreation. We love our tennis community, but we deserve facilities that match Richmond's standards for public health and wellness.
Sign this petition to demand that Richmond City Council prioritizes funding for outdoor tennis court resurfacing, lighting upgrades, root remediation, and windscreen installations in the upcoming budget.
