Fully reinstate Domino Midwifery services at CUMH

Update * Cllr Niamh O Connor, a Domino mother herself, has presented a motion on Domino Midwifery led care on this campaigns behalf. We extend our gratitude to her for highlighting this. Her motion was passed unanimously at tonight's ordinary meeting of council. Care pathways with such exceptional outcomes should never be diluted or curtailed...in fact the opposite...we need to expand and support Midwifery led care!

As a Nurse, Midwife, Lactation Consultant, and dedicated supporter of mothers, babies, and families, I witness firsthand the transformative power of Midwifery Led care. The Domino Midwifery service in the Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH) has provided indispensable support, empowerment, and optimal outcomes for countless women seeking more personalized and holistic birthing experiences. The recent reduction or potential removal of this service threatens to undermine these benefits, negatively impacting women in Cork and the surrounding areas.
The evidence supporting Midwifery Led care is overwhelming. According to the Cochrane Review, women who receive care from midwives have fewer interventions during birth, a greater likelihood of spontaneous vaginal birth, and higher satisfaction with their birth experiences. It's not just about statistics—it's about respecting women's birth choices and providing them with the safe, supportive environment that only Midwifery Led care can offer.
The Domino service, in particular, allows expectant mothers to receive continuity of care from a small team of dedicated midwives who understand their needs and preferences. This model reduces stress and anxiety for mothers, leading to healthier pregnancies and improved birth outcomes. Many women have shared their profound gratitude for the individualized care they experienced under Domino, creating lasting positive impacts on their journey into motherhood.
Despite these proven benefits, the Domino Midwifery services face curtailment. We understand the complexities of healthcare funding, but compromising on maternal care is not the solution. Reinstating the full scope of Domino Midwifery services at CUMH will assure expectant mothers that they are receiving the best possible care tailored to their unique needs.
