Some of you have spent months—or years—trying to explain something that sounds absolutely insane.
Congratulations. History has a high-profile case proving your problem.

This week I stumbled across something called the Martha Mitchell Effect, and I strongly recommend you research it for yourself.
Martha Mitchell was the outspoken wife of Nixon's Attorney General, John Mitchell, during Watergate. She started talking publicly about things happening around her that sounded extraordinary. Rather than simply investigating what she was saying, Martha herself became the story. She was portrayed as unstable, alcoholic, hysterical and crazy.
Tiny problem. A lot of what Crazy Martha was saying turned out to be true.
History eventually vindicated her, and psychologists later attached her name to a phenomenon in which truthful claims can be dismissed as delusional because what the person is describing sounds too extraordinary to believe.
Or, as I have decided to translate it into Lethal22 English: Why negate the message when you can discredit the messenger? And my personal favorite: Discredit the whistleblower and you don't have to listen to the whistle. Sound familiar to anyone? 😂
I'm not suggesting everyone in a custody dispute is Martha Mitchell, nor that every accusation of misconduct is true. Quite the opposite.
Investigate. Verify. Challenge. Ask questions. Consider competing explanations.
But don't make the mistake of assuming something cannot be true merely because it sounds unbelievable—or assuming someone must be crazy because they're describing something you have never personally experienced.
There is historical precedent for people suffering credibility attacks while trying to describe extraordinary events. Martha Mitchell is one hell of an example.
So that's your homework before tonight: Research the Martha Mitchell Effect.
