I've had a couple of people reach out to me about this petition regarding some of the things I have mentioned and with questions that I definitely should've pointed out to begin with. While the FUSD dress code does have some very unreasonable rules, some should certainly be kept. For example, clothes with inappropriate messages on them (vulgar, racist, homophobic, etc.) should not be allowed. The same goes for exposed undergarments and wearing sharp jewelry that could potentially get yourself and others hurt. I am not trying to convince the district to completely terminate the dress code but to simply adjust it in a way that isn't restricting and still reasonable.
Some of the current impractical rules include shorts, skirts, and dresses having to be longer than your fingertips when extended at your sides (commonly known as "the fingertip rule") and leggings are prohibited unless you are wearing appropriate coverage on top of them, such as the shorts, skirts, or dresses listed above. There are also rules against guns, alcohol, and drugs being displayed on clothing, which may seem reasonable; however, this, hypothetically, would include video game shirts with a character holding a gun or anti-drugs logos on tees.
Most middle and high schools throughout FUSD provide a student agenda listing the full dress code.
You may also use this petition I found on Change also against the FUSD dress code at the time for reference. The creator made many valid points and ideal changes to the rules.
