Support the Renaissance Village Project in Fremont

The Issue

The City of Fremont is under threat of losing local control over the city-owned property at Decoto Road and Fremont Blvd. With the severe shortage of affordable housing continuing unabated, state legislators are clearly seeking to wrest local control away from city and community leaders in favor of high-density and affordable projects. The newly-enacted California Land Surplus Act only increases the threat. If the City of Fremont is not pro-active in reaching a development agreement for the property, legislation can force the city to release control to the state - this is why we must act now and support the Renaissance Village development concept!

The “Renaissance Village” project is a community-led effort to redefine the city owned land. In 2019, it became clear to community members that something proactive needed to be done. The result of that effort is an exciting and innovative project providing learning and social facilities, retail and restaurants, parks and creative play areas – All designed to expose and educate children throughout the community to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (“STEAM”). Our hope is to inspire the next generation of Renaissance Women and Men.

The “Renaissance Village” is a mixed-use development on 9.59 acres located at the corner of Decoto Rd and Fremont Blvd. The site plan focuses on a ‘village concept’ that provides a pedestrian trail connecting the community center, preschool and retail center with the nearby residences and dog park. The pedestrian trail will connect to the very popular Quarry Lakes and Alameda Creek trails. Specifically, the project includes:

  • 179 residences (max) and will be three story townhomes or stacked flats;
  • 45,000 sf of park and creative play and learning areas exposing children to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (“STEAM”) principles;
  • 4,000 sf of retail and restaurants;
  • 4,000 sf community center;
  • 12,000 sf Montessori school w/7,000 sf play area; and,
  • Community dog park.

As residents of Fremont and neighbors to the Decoto property, we are asking the Mayor, City Council, and City Manager to move the Renaissance Village concept site plan forward. We strongly encourage the City to be proactive, to maintain local control, and to listen to the majority of residents in Districts 1 and 2, several of whom initiated this effort that has resulted in the Renaissance Village.
