UPDATE #15: Ms. Sangita Iyer, executive founding director of Voice for Asian Elephants Society (VFAES) sent a strong letter to the Delhi Zoo on November 25, 2021, enumerating several reasons, scientific and others, for why Shankar's release in pertinent and urgent.  Read the letter here

Voice for Asian Elephants Society (VFAES) is an organization with a vision to protect endangered Asian elephants and their habitats in India, while also ensuring that native people and those living near the forest fringes have their basic needs met, so they will be inspired to coexist peacefully with these magnificent animals. Ms. Sangita Iyer is the founder of Voice for Asian Elephants Society(VFAES), an award-winning wildlife filmmaker for her film "Gods in Shackles", a National Geographic explorer, and a biologist.

As several organizations stand firmly in support of Shankar, we hope the National Zoological Park (Delhi Zoo), Central Zoo Authority (CZA) and other decision makers are beginning to think about solutions for not only Shankar but also all the elephants suffering in various zoos across India... elephants who were promised freedom and rehabilitation as far back as in 2009 through a CZA circular which has till date not been given effect to.
